As voters cast their ballots to determine who will move on to the general election, campaigns are in full swing to get voters out to local polling stations.
This year’s electoral contests will be key in determining the future of the first state. These are the results for races up and down the ballot in this primary election.
Governor’s race
In one of the most contentious primaries for governor, featuring a wide range of candidates from both sides of the aisle, Matt Meyer came out on top for the Democrats, while Mike Ramone secured the primary win for the Republicans.
Meyer, New Castle County Executive, won the Democratic primary in what was one of the closest gubernatorial primaries in the state’s history. Meyer outpaced Bethany Hall-Long and Collin O’Mara, and will face Ramone in the general election.
Meyer, whose campaign focuses on green energy and public safety ran in contrast to the two other democratic opponents, with Hall-Long also facing a violation of campaign finance law during her run for the governor’s office.
State House Minority Leader Ramone clinched the Republican primary. Ramone, a moderate who announced his candidacy in May, hopes to promote bipartisanship and give a voice to Delaware’s minority viewpoints.
United States House
State Senator Sarah McBride made history by winning the Democratic primary for Delaware’s U.S. House seat. McBride is known for her advocacy on LGBTQ+ and healthcare issues.
John Whalen beat out Donyale Hall in the Republican primary. McBride and Whalen will face each other in the upcoming general election on Nov. 6.
Lt. Governor
In a crowded Democratic primary field, State Senator Kyle Evans Gay emerged victorious.
Her campaign focused on addressing the long-term effects of COVID-19, expanding universal pre-kindergarten and advocating for affordable healthcare and paid family leave.
New Castle County Executive
In another race for Delaware’s biggest county, Karen Hartley-Nagle and Marcus Henry faced each other in the Democratic primary.
Henry and Hartley-Nagle’s campaigns focused on issues facing New Castle County. Hartley-Nagel is currently the president of New Castle County and Henry has served in multiple roles within county governance.
Henry won the primary, his campaign has centerpieces on affordable housing, public safety, job development and numerous other issues facing the county moves on the general election.
